This tutorial will show how to add pad to your eureka pen rest.
Ebonite itself is a fairly soft material so it doesn't really harm your pen (although not 100% perfectly).
However, adding the soft pad will eliminate even the slightest possibility of your grip section getting burnished / scratched.
*The padding is recommended if you are going to use the pen rest for expensive, high-end fountain pens.
Soft pad material:
1) felt (0.5~1mm thickness) / various colors
2) leather sheet (0.5~1mm thickness) / various colors
3) or any other materials that is sheet based, and soft enough to be harmless to grip section.
*from my experience, you don't want the padding to be too thick.
Although this may be up to your personal preference.
press the felt sheet firmly against the round area of the pen rest.
*You must keep the felt sheet from moving around (you could get false imprint)
*Use both of your hands, press your thumb firmly against the edges
You will get an approximate imprint.
It might be a bit vague, so perfection is not easy (although not required)
Cut out the imprint with scissors / razor blade etc.
Concentrate and work slowly to get the best approximation.
After cutting the piece out, the result may be jagged like below,
Do some additional cutting to smooth out the piece.
For fixing the pad to the penrest, I found double sided tape to be useful.
Please use a thin double sided tape
the one in the picture is too thick, and I don't recommend it.
I just used it for this tutorial.
Do not use adhesives.
It would be painfully difficult or impossible to remove later on, when the pad gets contaminated / worn down.
Water soluble adhesives may be ok, as it is easier to remove.
Just make sure the adhesive is easy to remove, If you do not want to use double sided tape.
This is a completed felt (black) padded penrest.
Due to the thick double sided tape, and thick felt sheet (1mm),
it is rather a bit protruding and not flush with the edges.
whether it is protrusive or not is totally up to your preference though.
