Today I announce the completed development of Super Urushi 4.
Urushi work has been a personal research of mine since 2019.
For 5 years, I've been doing urushi research focusing mainly on durability and aesthetics.
above all, urushi durability has been the main objective.
when i started doing urushi on fountain pens,
I didn't know much and I was told that urushi is very strong material.
so I just blindedly coated the pens with urushi.
however, I soon found out the urushi layer would not hold up.
based on my personal research data,
urushi layering without careful consideration for durability will only last at most 1 year (when used often as daily driver).
the majority of issue is urushi delamination, in forms of cracks, peels, and bubbles.
on top of that when urushi is applied on cylindrical surface, it is weaker compared to a flat surface, due to many factors.
and because the radius of fountain pens are very small, it makes things even worse.
also, fountain pens are subject to various loads such as drop shock, abrasion, dings, etc.
therefore, this is why i focused mainly on maximizing durability of urushi layers,
through the 5 years, i've accumulated urushi knowhows, self-developed various techniques and machineries, and introduced advanced state of the art technologies.
Compared to previous generation (SU 3),
Super Urushi 4 has been upgraded in following aspects:
1. enhanced productivity
2. higher durability
3. enhanced maintenance/repairability of urushi
4. consistent high quality urushi layer formation
5. stabilization / improved durability of the various types of urushi techniques
6. achievement of theoretical completion & integration of urushi coating technology
with the development of this technology,
now i will focus more on production of the pens.
